Historical Background

The regularity and richness of the annual Nile River flood allowed the development of one of the world's great civilizations. A unified kingdom arose circa 3200 B.C.; the last dynasty fell to the Persians in 341 B.C., who were replaced by the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines. The Arab introduced Islam and the Arabic language in the 7th century, ruling for the next six centuries. A military caste, the Mamluks, took control about 1250 and then Egypt was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. After the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt became an important world transportation hub, but full of debts. Britain seized control of Egypt's government in order to protect its investments, although a nominal allegiance to the Ottomans continued until 1914. Egypt acquired full sovereignty with the overthrow of the British backed monarchy in 1952.

SHOPS & WHAT TO BUY
Shops are generally open from 10.00 to 23.00. Egypt offers many bazaars, also known as suq, where you can buy typical items of this country like silver, cotton, papyrus, leather, gold, copper, spices. Travel Express recommends shops where the client can be sure that the items purchased are of value and not replaced with items of lesser value. None of these shops belongs to Travel Express. The client ultimately decides where to buy, what to buy, and at which price.

PASSPORTS
Passport is required with minimum 6 months validity and visa. You usually have to deliver your passport at the hotel reception upon check in. Please do not forget your passport when leaving the hotel.

TIPS
As in all other Oriental countries, tips are considered a part of the salary for services rendered. Your transfer and local guide will inform you of how much is customary to give. Travel Express generally choose to include all the tips; but this general policy varies from one market to another. Anyway our operator (when quoting) or coordinator (upon arrival) or our guide (during the trip) will inform you about the included and excluded tips and how much is usual to tip.
